This is the scene for much summer fun, especially when it’s hot. If you’ve ever read The Complete Tales and Poems of Winnie-the-Pooh by A. A. Milne, you will be familiar with a game Winnie-the-Pooh invents called Poohsticks. My children call it Boats. It’s essentially the same thing and provides hours of entertainment on a hot day.
First the children scavenge the area for suitable contestansts.
Here are some likely candidates that didn’t make the final cut.
He enters the water with the contenders.
Sleeky and Hot Sauce are released into the current. Quality racing names are a must.
Downstream she catches Sleeky but misses Hot Sauce.
Hot Sauce is heading for some rapids.
She runs ahead and searches and searches…
He takes to the land to get ahead of Hot Sauce.
He jumps back in, eyes searching the water. Did he make it in time?
There she comes. She’s saved Hot Sauce!
Relieved, he can now relax and enjoy a little swim.
No worries. It’s not really that deep.
You never know what will happen when the five year-old gets stung by a be and you ask for some mud.
This is not lookin’ good. I’m outta here.
We always found the bark with knotholes so we could poke a leaf in for a sail and lined the top with tiny pebbles for people – I guess it makes it a little more violent that way, but it’s very entertaining!

Nate did the same thing. My children had sails there that day, too. But one mysteriously disappeared before the race.
