Any ideas for chapter books I can read aloud to my children? Books that specifically would be interesting to this six-year-old and his nine-year-old sister?
It’d be really nice if the book could be enjoyed by everyone in this wild bunch. Please leave your ideas in the comments. Thanks!!
Try the Boxcar children series and Little House on the Prairie series. Annika says she loved those books when she was younger.
My kids and I enjoyed Louis Sachar’s books (Wayside Stories). We also enjoyed books by the auther Dan Greenburg, specifically the series about the adventures of Maximum Boy. We also enjoyed the Fudge and Superfudge series by Judy Blume.
I bet they’d love Chronicles of Narnia, if they haven’t read it yet. We had a great time reading that as a family. I think it’s my favorite fiction now…
Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Sounds like I need a trip the library. Too bad it’s closed on Fridays.
Try the Soup Books. Like “Soup for President” … Not the Chicken Soup for the (enter whatever you want here). My Mom got them from the library one time I was sick when I was younger. They are very funny.
I just read Rowan of Rin by Emily Rodda for a book group. It’s about a young weak boy’s role in a trek to save his village. I think a 9-year-old girl would like the riddles and character interactions; a 6-year-old boy would like the swamp and dragon.
This will be in the queue after we finish Harry Potter book 1. Yes, I know HP is OLD NEWS, but to my own 6- and 8-year-olds it’s captivatingly fresh.
Another Louis Sachar goodie is Holes.
We absolutely loved The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate di Camillo. Edward is a porcelain rabbit!
And if you’ve never read Mary Poppins, you must just for the chapter about birds understanding the way babies speak.
Oooh … your photo hadn’t come up until now. Jon Sciezka (the same author of the wolf book, another of our faves) has a series of chapter books called Time Warp Trio, or something like that. We listened to some years ago and laughed silly.
Have you read Frindle by Andrew Clements? I think it should be required reading for education majors.
OK … I’m done … maybe
Jenni, I’ve been looking forward to your reply. I knew you’d have lots of good recommendations. Also, I never thought to read HP aloud, My older children read the series themselves.
Fablehaven is fantastic, if they haven’t read that.
Happy Birthday, Katrina, dear! Happy days will come to you all year. If I had a wish, then it would be —
A Happy, Happy Birthday to you from me!
