Scripture Story: Daniel and the Lions’ Den
Song: I Pray in Faith 

Daily
Sing I Pray in Faith (CS p. 14) Learn one line each day.
Practice putting cards with letters of name in order. Have name written on 3×5 card for 4yo to look at while he does it–later it will be used for a check at the end of ordering the cards.
Practice writing first name on the white board.

Monday

Read When Dinosaurs Came With Everything written by Elise Broach illustrated by David Small
Point out the letter Dd and the sound it makes in Dinosaur and other d-words in the book.
Use Dinosuar Cards (source: October Idea Book by Teacher’s Friend Publications) to go back through the book and match to the different dinosaurs mentioned in the story.

Tuesday

Let preschooler punch dots out of colored paper.
Glue dots to cut out letter D.
Add dot stickers if I have any left.
Practice finger-writing D and d in salt or flour in a pan. (Thanks Jenni!)
Read Dinosaur Dream by Dennis Nolan
Act out this Dinosaur Poem written by my talented friend Jenni:

Small and giant dinosaurs (crouch then jump up)
Roamed the earth so long ago. (swing arms, march in place)
Some of them had plants to eat, (hold arm and hand up like a tree)
Others liked to chew their meat. (put arm in front of mouth)
Small and giant dinosaurs
Roamed the earth so long ago.

Wednesday
Introduce letter Ee and its sound
Make letter E with popsicle sticks. Glue together.
Make hard boiled eggs for lunch.
Glue shell pieces from eggs on popsicle letter E.

Thursday
Build giant letters E and e with blocks. Talk about the Ee sound.
Talk about dinosaurs coming from eggs. Look through Usborne’s First Encyclopedia of Dinosaurs and Prehistoric Life. (I have another better dinosaur info book that I can’t find right now. Hopefully I can find it by Thursday.)
Make dinosaur eggs by having preschooler hide little plastic dinosaurs inside playdough. Form playdough into eggs. “Hatch” the eggs and match the dinosuars to the dinosaur cards and talk about their names. (Source:Preschool by Stormie)

Friday-Scripture Story
Read Daniel and the Lions’ Den (Old Testament Stories, chapter 43)
Teach the following excerpt from lesson book Primary 1: I Am a Child of God:

Show picture 1-14, Daniel in the Lions’ Den. Tell the story from Daniel 6. Read aloud the first part of verse 22 to explain why Daniel was not hurt while he was in the lions’ den.

Explain that Daniel wanted to pray because it was a commandment from Heavenly Father and also because he wanted to thank Heavenly Father for his blessings

  • What did the king do because Daniel prayed? (See Daniel 6:16.)
  • What happened to Daniel in the lions’ den? (See Daniel 6:22.)
  • How do you know that Heavenly Father listened to Daniel’s prayer? (See Daniel 6:23.)

Dramatize the story of Daniel in the lions’ den.  If you do not want to act out the entire story, have the preschooler pretend to be a growling lion, and then have him close his mouth as if the angel shut it.

Sing I Pray in Faith.

    I love your textured letters. Are you keeping them all to make into a book? Brings to mind the book Emma did. (She’s the one child of mine who had an outside preschool.) I think M was her favorite to make: bite a mini-marshmallow in half and stick it directly on, no need for glue.

    I know I’m going to wow you when I say the poem is actually a song — to “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.” Hence, my description of it as a “twinkling ditty.” 🙂 Sly, no?

    Making the letters into a book is a great idea. I usually hang them up all along a couple of different walls as we go.

    I knew that poem was a song! I just didn’t know to what tune. That’s just like you to leave a clue. Kinda embarrassed I didn’t figure it out.
